Country House in Yorkshire

A lovingly restored farmhouse in the leafy borders of North Yorkshire was transformed into a country house for a family of five. The owners of this generous four-bedroom home, dating back to 1875, have a passion for period buildings and are true antique lovers, having recently started their own collection.

The complete restoration of the property included a two storey extension to the rear, which overlooks a private lake, and a single storey extension to the side. These new spaces house the main bedroom with double height apex ceiling as well as the main living areas, including a large family roo  and open plan kitchen.

Our brief was to maintain the period style in the original Victorian part of the house, whilst creating a more modern country look in the new extension, reflecting the needs of a growing family.

Creating an interior design scheme

For this project, we worked collaboratively with the client on developing the overall look and feel of the interior scheme. We created mood boards with all materials, selected finishes, free standing furniture, decorative lighting and accessories.

In the entrance hall of the original part of the house,we installed a Victorian mosaic floor that was hand laid piece by piece. The snug and library rooms were given new fireplace surrounds and log burners. The bathrooms were furnished with traditional Victorian sanitary ware and striking chequered floor tiles.

Every room in the house was designed with own personality, as you might find in a boutique hotel. Screen printed wallpapers with original motifs were sourced from Morris & Co, together with sophisticated embroidery fabrics, sumptuous velvets and cosy tartans, reflecting the different moods of the rooms. Furnished with antiques sourced from auctions and the owner’s personal collection, each space felt truly unique. The end result is an ultra chic country house with upscale design credentials.
